Hermès Kelly vs Birkin: Which Is the Better Investment in Malaysia Right Now? (2026 Guide)

Pre-owned Birkins sit at the top of the Hermès market in Malaysia: black Togo Birkin 25s in very good condition have sold at Glampot for RM 61,800 and RM 74,000, while Kellys have cleared RM 23,249 to RM 48,000 depending on size, leather, age and condition. So the Birkin has the higher ceiling and the Kelly is the cheaper way into Hermès. Below are the actual figures, what they do and do not prove, and how to choose between the two bags.

First, a Quick Introduction for the Uninitiated

The Hermès Birkin debuted in 1984, famously designed on an Air France flight after actress Jane Birkin sat next to Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas. It is a structured tote with two short handles — spacious, practical, and unmistakably status-signalling.

The Hermès Kelly is older — originally designed in the 1930s as a saddle bag, it was renamed after Grace Kelly used one to shield her pregnancy from photographers in 1956. It is a more formal, structured bag with a single top handle and an optional shoulder strap, available in two versions: the soft-fold Retourné and the structured Sellier.

Both are made to order. Neither is available freely in-store. Both are, arguably, the most coveted handbags on earth.

What Kellys and Birkins Have Actually Sold For Here

Most Kelly-versus-Birkin articles quote asking prices from marketplaces. We can do something better: these are realised selling prices from our own invoices — what a Malaysian buyer actually paid, matched to the condition grade we gave the bag at the time. Our grades run 6/10 to 10/10 and are explained on our condition grading page.

Every bag below is pre-owned. We do not sell brand-new Hermès, so nothing here is a retail price or a comparison against one.

What this table is, and what it is not

It is a set of individual sales, not a market index. Hermès reaches us in small numbers, no two bags are the same specification, age or condition, and a handful of sales cannot establish a trend. Read each line as one real transaction — useful as a reference point when you are looking at a comparable bag — rather than as a price list or a forecast.

With that said, two things are visible in the figures. The Birkins we sold cleared more than the Kellys we sold, which matches what anyone in the trade would tell you about the two bags. And condition and age move the price hard: the two black Epsom Kelly 28 Selliers here, one at 8.5/10 and one a vintage piece at 7.5/10, sold RM 24,751 apart. That gap is the single most useful thing on the page.

Note also that our Birkin 25s happened to clear more than our Birkin 30s. Smaller Birkins are widely understood to be scarcer and more sought after, but with two sales of each we would not present that as a rule — only as what these particular bags did.

Why marketplace asking prices mislead

Look at Carousell or Instagram and you will see Birkin 25s asked at RM 80,000–95,000 and Kelly 25s at RM 70,000–86,000. Those are what sellers hope for, not what bags change hands for. An asking price costs nothing to post and can sit unsold for a year; a realised price is the end of a negotiation. Treat any Kelly-versus-Birkin comparison built on listing prices — including the earlier version of this article — with that in mind.

A Note on the Word 'Investment'

You will find articles quoting precise appreciation rates for these bags — 183% for a Birkin Sellier, 282% for a Mini Kelly, and so on. We used to quote some of those numbers ourselves. We have removed them, because we could not trace any of them to a source we would stand behind, and a single high asking price is not an appreciation rate.

What we can say from our own records is narrower and more useful: Hermès bags in classic leathers and wearable colours, in good condition and with their box and papers, resell strongly and predictably in Malaysia, and pre-owned Birkins are the most expensive bags that pass through our hands. What we cannot tell you is what any individual bag will be worth in five years. A handbag is not a financial instrument, we are not licensed to give investment advice, and anyone quoting you a guaranteed return on one is selling something.

The Malaysia Factor

Here is something most global luxury guides will not tell you: Malaysian retail prices for Hermès sit above Japan and Europe. Japan is the cheapest market in Asia for Hermès — buyers regularly fly specifically for 'Hermès runs' — and Europe offers a VAT refund on the way out. Malaysia gets neither.

What that means for a Malaysian buyer:

1. Your entry price at the boutique is higher, so your margin on resale is thinner unless you buy pre-owned or hold longer.
2. Buying authenticated pre-owned locally is usually the cheaper entry, with no customs risk and no flight.
3. Selling in Malaysia works precisely because the buyers who cannot travel or access the grey market are here, and they pay properly for a bag they can inspect and trust.

The verdict, September 2026. If you want the higher ceiling and the most liquid bag in the country, buy a Birkin 25 in black or an earth tone — that is where our highest Hermès prices have landed, at RM 61,800 and RM 74,000 for black Togo examples. What to Watch Out For

Fakes are sophisticated

The quality of Hermès counterfeits has improved dramatically. Hardware weight, stitching angle, blind stamps and leather grain are all potential tells, but reading them takes experience. Condition is most of the price

The two black Epsom Kelly 28 Selliers above differed by one grade and RM 24,751. Scratched hardware, corner wear and interior staining compress value hard, and they are the first things a buyer looks at.

Colour decides how fast it sells

In our experience the Malaysian market moves fastest on earth and neutral tones — Etoupe, Gold, Craie, Noir. Those find a buyer at a sensible price without much waiting. Bright and statement colours are a different proposition: Rouge, for instance, does not move quickly here unless it is priced keenly, however beautiful the bag. That is not a reason to avoid a colour you love, but it is worth knowing before you buy something you may want to move on in a few years.

Ask what is included

Box, dust bag, rain cover, clochette, keys, lock and receipt all carry real money on a Hermès bag — more than on any other brand.
