Chanel Authentication
How to Authenticate a Chanel Handbag
A comprehensive guide to identifying genuine Chanel handbags — from vintage serial stickers to the modern microchip era — covering materials, craftsmanship, and hardware.
The Microchip Era
From around spring 2021, Chanel began replacing the traditional hologram serial stickers and authenticity cards on handbags with embedded microchips — a major shift in how bags are authenticated.
Metal Plate with Embedded NFC Microchip
Since the 2021 changeover, new Chanel bags feature a small rectangular metal plate attached to the bag's interior. For Wallet on Chain (WOC) models, the plate is inside the zip pocket. The plate's hardware colour matches the rest of the bag and features the CC logo with an 8-character alphanumeric code (a mix of letters and numbers) beneath it. Unlike the old serial numbers, these codes are random and do not reveal the production year.
Serial 31XXXXXX was the last sequential code on handbags · SLGs continued with 32XXXXXX through 2022 before switching to random codes
What This Means for Authentication
The microchip uses NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology. Only Chanel staff can access the full product history through their proprietary database, but authenticators can still verify bags through the plate's craftsmanship, placement, dimensions, and overall bag construction. Counterfeiters do copy the plate's appearance, and buyers cannot read the chip themselves, so the plate alone proves nothing.
Serial Number Reference
Since the mid-1980s, authentic Chanel handbags included a serial number sticker inside the bag's lining, matching the number on an accompanying authenticity card.
A Note on Missing Items
Serial number stickers may become detached over time, and authenticity cards are often lost. A Chanel handbag missing these items may still be genuine. From around 2000 onward, stickers were protected by clear tape with a hologram security feature.

Leather Quality
The quality of leather is one of the most immediate indicators of authenticity. Chanel uses only the finest materials, and the difference from counterfeits is palpable.
Lambskin · Soft & Smooth
Genuine Chanel lambskin feels exceptionally soft to the touch with a visibly smooth, buttery appearance. The superior quality is easy to distinguish from counterfeits, which tend to feel stiff or plasticky.

Caviar Leather · Textured & Durable
Caviar leather is made from pebbled calfskin with a distinctly bubbly texture. It should feel like running your hands across raised dimples. More durable than lambskin — less likely to scratch or mark — making it easier to distinguish from inferior counterfeit materials.

Quilting Pattern
The iconic diamond quilting is one of the strongest authenticity indicators.
Craftsmanship · Diamond Alignment
Check the back of the bag where the pocket sits. The diamond pattern should be perfectly consistent and aligned throughout. For pre-loved bags, slight misalignment may occur from natural leather stretching, so this check is most reliable on new bags.
- What to look for — Consistent diamond shapes across all panels
- Red flag — Irregular or uneven diamonds, misaligned seams

Stitching & Lining
Precision stitching is a hallmark of Chanel craftsmanship.
Precision · Stitch Count & Lining
Chanel flap bags are often cited as having up to eleven stitches along each side of a diamond, but stitch count alone is no longer a reliable test — counterfeits now match it, and the count varies with bag size and leather. Treat it as one small clue, not proof. Far more telling is the lining: it should lie perfectly flat with no bumps, lumps, or creases, which would signal inferior leather and poor construction.
- Stitch count — A clue, not proof — often 8–11 per diamond side, varies by era and size
- Lining — Perfectly flat, no bumps or looseness

Hardware & Locks
The iconic CC turn-lock and chain straps are among the most scrutinised elements.
CC Turn-Lock · The Interlocking Cs
The right C overlaps the left at the top, and the left C overlaps the right at the bottom. Counterfeits often get the overlap wrong. The lock can be raised or flat. The original 2.55 uses a rectangular "Mademoiselle" lock without CC logo — bags with this lock may still be genuine.
- Gold hardware — 24k gold-plated on vintage bags (roughly pre-2008); quality plating wears slowly and evenly
- Back plate — Flat-head screws on older bags, star-shaped screws on newer ones; Phillips-head screws are a warning sign; clean font, even spacing

Chain Straps · Leather-Threaded Links
The leather should be woven evenly through the links, with neat folds and stitching. Threading styles vary by era and model, so compare with a verified example of the same bag.

Branding & Stamps
The embossed Chanel logo and stamping marks reveal telltale signs of authenticity.
Logo Details · Embossed Precision
The Chanel stamp should be deeply embossed into the leather, not merely "sitting" on the surface. Counterfeits often use thinner fonts with a shallower impression. Its size and position should match a verified bag of the same model and size.
- Stamp on lock — Varies by era and model; not a reliable test on its own
- Logo proportions — Match a verified bag of the same model and size

Back of Lock · Stamping Marks
Stamping marks vary by style and era, so the presence or absence of a stamp is not proof either way. Check the back of the turn-lock — back plates use flat-head screws on older bags and star-shaped screws on newer ones (Phillips-head screws are a warning sign), with clean, evenly spaced lettering.

Shape & Zippers
Final details that separate genuine craftsmanship from imitations.
Construction · Bag Silhouette
Authentic Chanel bags hold a crisp, well-defined shape, with neat, even corners true to the model's design. Counterfeits are often poorly constructed, with lumpy or misshapen corners that indicate improper turning and inferior materials.

Hardware · Zipper Varieties
Chanel has used several zipper makers, including Lampo, EP, a three-Cs-in-a-circle mark, Opti, Éclair, DMC and YKK. Older and vintage bags may have unmarked zippers. An unfamiliar zipper mark is a reason to look more closely, not proof on its own.
Knowledge Is Your Best Protection
No single indicator determines authenticity on its own. Consider the full picture — serial numbers, microchip plates, leather quality, stitching precision, hardware details, and overall construction — to make an informed assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chanel still use serial numbers?
Not in the sticker-and-card format. Since around April 2021, new Chanel bags carry a metal plaque with an embedded NFC microchip instead of a serial sticker, and authenticity cards have been discontinued. The plaque is engraved with an eight-character alphanumeric code that does not currently indicate the year of manufacture in any publicly decodable way. Bags made before the changeover keep their original stickers and serial-based dating.
Can Entrupy authenticate Chanel bags?
Yes. Chanel is one of the brands Entrupy supports. The system photographs the bag's materials at high magnification and compares them against a database built from millions of data points, with a stated accuracy rate of 99.86 per cent and a financial guarantee behind each certificate. At Glampot, bags are authenticated by hand by our in-house team, with Entrupy, Real Authentication or Bababebi used when needed.
Where can I buy or sell an authenticated Chanel bag in Malaysia?
If you are buying from or consigning with Glampot at Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur, your bag is authenticated by hand by a team experienced in preloved luxury since 2007, with Entrupy, Real Authentication or Bababebi used when needed.
My Chanel bag's serial sticker has fallen off. Is it fake?
Not necessarily. Stickers on older bags lift and detach over time, and Malaysia's humidity does the adhesive no favours. A missing sticker lowers resale value and removes one checkpoint, but authenticity is judged on the whole bag — quilting, stitching, hardware, leather and stamping. Professional authentication is strongly recommended before buying or selling a bag without its sticker.
What year is my Chanel bag based on its serial number?
Seven-digit serials date the bag between 1986 and 2005, with the first digit indicating the series; eight-digit serials run from 2005 to around 2022, with the first two digits indicating the series. A serial beginning with 14, for example, dates to roughly 2010–2011. See the era-by-era sticker guide in this guide for the full breakdown.
Is it safe to buy a preloved Chanel bag without the authenticity card?
Often, yes. Cards get lost, and Chanel stopped issuing them entirely with the 2021 microchip transition — so many legitimate bags have none. A card is also weak evidence by itself, since counterfeiters print matching sticker-and-card sets. What matters is the bag itself, verified through physical inspection and professional authentication.
