How to Authenticate a Balenciaga Bag
From the interior label and season code to the signature hardware, distressed leather, and hand-finished details — the indicators that separate a genuine Balenciaga from a counterfeit.
Before You Buy
A Modern Icon, Worth Protecting
Balenciaga began in the couture house of Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga before moving to Paris and becoming a label coveted by celebrities, street-style stars, and the fashion elite alike. An authentic Balenciaga holds its value for years — and can be identified by the indicators below.
Section I
Interior Labels
The interior label is the first and most obvious identifier — start here every time.

Name Plate
Underscore vs. Period
The interior label is printed on a metal name plate or leather tab. From 2001–2004 it reads "Balenciaga_Paris" (with an underscore); from 2005 onward it reads "Balenciaga.Paris" (with a period). Pay very close attention to which mark is used.
From 2001–2008 these labels were sterling silver; today they are nickel. The style number appears on the front or back of the tab — sometimes both. If a serial number is present on the front, it should match the number on the back.

Serial & Letter
The Season Indicator
There is an alphabetic indicator at the end of each serial number that designates the season the bag is from. Balenciaga works backwards through the alphabet, so the letter quickly reveals the bag's season — see the table below.
Note: newer bags without metal name plates still carry this letter stamped on the back of the tab alongside the serial number.
Section II
Season Letter Codes
Match the final letter of the serial to its season. Because the alphabet has cycled, some letters (such as D) appear in two different years — use the bag's overall style and hardware to confirm the era.
| Letter | Season |
|---|---|
| D | S/S 2016 |
| E | F/W 2015 |
| F | S/S 2015 |
| G | F/W 2014 |
| H | S/S 2014 |
| I | F/W 2013 |
| J | S/S 2013 |
| K | F/W 2012 |
| L | S/S 2012 |
| M | F/W 2011 |
| N | S/S 2011 |
| O | F/W 2010 |
| P | S/S 2010 |

| S | F/W 2008 |
| T | S/S 2008 |
| U | F/W 2007 |
| V | S/S 2007 |

Section III
Hardware
Distinctive hardware is what makes a Balenciaga recognisable from across a room.

Studs & Zippers
Edgy, Precise Metalwork
The motorcycle bags are known for edgy stud hardware in three styles — classic, giant, and covered. On recent bags the back of the handles should show notched rivets, the zippers should be marked "Lampo", and the bales connecting the handles to the side O-rings should be rounded, crimped, and form a double layer.
Section IV
Construction
The way the bag is built betrays a counterfeit — look inside the pockets.

Pockets & Lining
Leather-Lined Front Pocket
Pay attention to the pockets. From the beginning of 2005, the front pocket has been partially lined in leather — so when you unzip it, you should not see the black canvas that makes up the rest of the lining. A fully canvas-lined front pocket on a bag claimed to be post-2005 is a red flag.
Section V
Material
Balenciaga's signature distressed leather only gets better with age.

Leather
Soft, Matte & Distressed
Balenciaga bags feature a characteristic distressed leather that ages beautifully. Since Fall/Winter 2007 the material switched from goatskin to lambskin — both are thin, soft, lightweight, and crinkle with age, yet remain durable. Counterfeits typically use a shinier or stiffer leather with no softening and no matte quality to the surface.
Section VI
The Details
Details, details, details — the final layer of verification.

Handles & Tassels
Braided, Raw-Edged Leather
On the motorcycle bag, examine the mirror, the handles, and the zipper tassels. The handles should be braided with sueded leather that looks more raw than the body of the bag, and the underside of the zipper tassels should share that same soft, raw, suede feel. Now that you know what to look for, you can shop with confidence.
Shop With Confidence
No single detail confirms a Balenciaga on its own — read the label, the season letter, the hardware, the construction, and the leather together. When you'd like a second opinion, Glampot's authentication team is always here to help.
