How to Authenticate Balenciaga Handbags
How to Authenticate a Balenciaga Bag
From the interior label and season code to the signature hardware, distressed leather, and hand-finished details — the indicators that separate a genuine Balenciaga from a counterfeit.
A Modern Icon, Worth Protecting
Balenciaga began in the couture house of Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga before moving to Paris and becoming a label coveted by celebrities, street-style stars, and the fashion elite alike. An authentic Balenciaga holds its value for years — and can be identified by the indicators below.

Interior Labels
The interior label is the first and most obvious identifier — start here every time.
Name Plate · Underscore vs. Period

The interior label is printed on a metal name plate or leather tab. Until around 2005 it reads "Balenciaga_Paris" (with an underscore); from around 2005 onward it reads "Balenciaga.Paris" (with a period). Pay very close attention to which mark is used.
From 2001–2008 these labels were sterling silver — genuine silver plates made before Fall/Winter 2008 carry a small "925" stamp in the bottom-right corner. Later plates are nickel, and many models (including most giant-hardware bags) use a leather tab instead of a metal plate. The style number appears on the front or back of the tab — sometimes both. If a serial number is present on the front, it should match the number on the back.
Serial & Letter · The Season Indicator

Within the code is a single standalone letter — usually at the end of the serial, though on some tags it sits near the beginning — that designates the season the bag is from. Balenciaga works backwards through the alphabet, so the letter quickly reveals the bag's season — see the table below.
Note: from 2012, bags without metal name plates also carry this letter stamped on the back of the leather tab alongside the serial number. On classic silver plates, the top line is typically an "N" followed by four digits (commonly thought to be a leather batch code), then the season letter, with the style number on the line beneath.
Where to Look · Finding & Reading the Code
Placement varies by model, so check all three of the usual spots before assuming a code is missing:
- Behind the logo plate — On the back of the interior brand plate or leather tab — the most common position on City, First, Work and Weekender bags.
- Inner lining panel — On some models the tag sits beside or inside the interior pocket.
- Metal plate vs. leather tab — Metal plates are typical of classic-hardware City, First, Work and Weekender bags; most other styles use leather tabs with embossed details (matching the hardware colour).
To read it: locate the standalone letter, match it to the season table below, then confirm the style number on the front of the tab matches the back. Other digits on the plate are internal production codes and can be ignored. Bags made before Fall/Winter 2003 carry no season letter at all — on those, dating relies on the seasonal colour, the label font and when the style and hardware were introduced, not the tag.
Season Letter Codes
Match the letter to its season. Balenciaga runs backwards through the alphabet, skipping X, and wrapped round to Z after A — so the letters A to D each appear in two different years. Use the bag's overall style, hardware and label font to confirm which era you are looking at.
| Letter | Season |
|---|---|
| A | F/W 2017 |
| B | S/S 2017 |
| C | F/W 2016 |
| D | S/S 2016 |
| E | F/W 2015 |
| F | S/S 2015 |
| G | F/W 2014 |
| H | S/S 2014 |
| I | F/W 2013 |
| J | S/S 2013 |
| K | F/W 2012 |
| L | S/S 2012 |
| M | F/W 2011 |
| N | S/S 2011 |
| O | F/W 2010 |
| P | S/S 2010 |
| Q | F/W 2009 |
| R | S/S 2009 |
| S | F/W 2008 |
| T | S/S 2008 |
| U | F/W 2007 |
| V | S/S 2007 |
| W | F/W 2006 |
| Y | S/S 2006 |
| Z | F/W 2005 |
| A | S/S 2005 |
| B | F/W 2004 |
| C | S/S 2004 |
| D | F/W 2003 |
| — | S/S 2003 and earlier: no season letter used |
Dating Clues · Telling the Two Cycles Apart
Because A, B, C and D were each used twice, a letter alone can point to two different years. The label itself settles it — Balenciaga changed the tag's typography and wording several times, and these shifts are hard for counterfeiters to keep straight:
- 2003 – S/S 2004 — Season letters begin (F/W 2003). Early tags use a serif typeface.
- F/W 2004 — Typeface switches to sans serif — a quick way to separate a 2004 "B" or "C" tag from a 2016–17 one.
- 2011 — The heat-stamped "made in italy" on the tag back changes to uppercase "MADE IN ITALY".
- 2012 — The season letter is added to the back of the leather tab, making leather-only tags datable for the first time.
- 2014 – 2017 — Tag front restyled; "FABRIQUÉ EN ITALIE" added to the back, then dropped again around F/W 2017.
- Watch out — The S/S 2004 "C" tag is among the most heavily faked — scrutinise the font, the 925 stamp and the hardware on any bag claiming that season.
Hardware
Distinctive hardware is what makes a Balenciaga recognisable from across a room.
Studs & Zippers · Edgy, Precise Metalwork
The motorcycle bags are known for edgy stud hardware in several styles — including classic, giant, and covered. On bags from 2005 onward the back of the handles should show notched rivets, many zippers are marked "Lampo" (from 2014 a "B" logo replaced it), and the bales connecting the handles to the side O-rings should be rounded, crimped, and form a double layer.
- Zipper mark — Many genuine zips are stamped "Lampo"; from 2014 a "B" is used instead
- Note — Giant 21 hardware was phased out in 2012 and replaced by the smaller Giant 12

Construction
The way the bag is built betrays a counterfeit — look inside the pockets.
Pockets & Lining · Leather-Lined Front Pocket
Pay attention to the pockets. From the beginning of 2005, the front pocket has been partially lined in leather — so when you unzip it, you should not see the black canvas that makes up the rest of the lining. A fully canvas-lined front pocket on a bag claimed to be post-2005 is a red flag.

Material
Balenciaga's signature distressed leather only gets better with age.
Leather · Soft, Matte & Distressed
Balenciaga bags feature a characteristic distressed leather that ages beautifully. In Fall/Winter 2007 the main leather switched from goatskin to lambskin (goatskin later returned for some seasons) — both are thin, soft, lightweight, and crinkle with age, yet remain durable. Counterfeits typically use a shinier or stiffer leather with no softening and no matte quality to the surface.
- Authentic — Soft, matte, naturally distressed
- Fake — Shiny, stiff, doesn't wear in

The Details
Details, details, details — the final layer of verification.
Handles & Tassels · Braided, Raw-Edged Leather
On the motorcycle bag, examine the mirror, the handles, and the zipper tassels. The handles should be soft, with a slightly sueded, raw look compared with the body of the bag, and neatly wrapped where they join it, and the underside of the zipper tassels should share that same soft, raw, suede feel.
