How to Authenticate a Chanel Handbag

A comprehensive guide to identifying genuine Chanel handbags — from vintage serial stickers to the modern microchip era — covering materials, craftsmanship, and hardware.

New in 2021

The Microchip Era

In April 2021, Chanel replaced the traditional hologram serial stickers and authenticity cards with embedded microchips — a major shift in how bags are authenticated.

Metal Plate with Embedded NFC Microchip

Starting with the 21A collection, Chanel bags now feature a small rectangular metal plate (approximately 20mm × 13mm × 2mm) attached to the bag's interior. For Wallet on Chain (WOC) models, the plate is inside the zip pocket. The plate's hardware colour matches the rest of the bag and features the CC logo with an 8-character alphanumeric code (a mix of letters and numbers) beneath it. Unlike the old serial numbers, these codes are random and do not reveal the production year.

Serial 31XXXXXX was the last sequential code on handbags · SLGs continued with 32XXXXXX through 2022 before switching to random codes

What This Means for Authentication

The microchip uses NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology. Only Chanel staff can access the full product history through their proprietary database, but authenticators can still verify bags through the plate's craftsmanship, placement, dimensions, and overall bag construction. The chip is nearly impossible for counterfeiters to replicate functionally.

Section I

Serial Number Reference

Since 1986, authentic Chanel handbags included a serial number sticker inside the bag's lining, matching the number on an accompanying authenticity card.

A Note on Missing Items

Serial number stickers may become detached over time, and authenticity cards are often lost. A Chanel handbag missing these items may still be genuine. From 2000 onward, stickers were protected by clear tape with a hologram security feature.

Section II

Leather Quality

The quality of leather is one of the most immediate indicators of authenticity. Chanel uses only the finest materials, and the difference from counterfeits is palpable.

Chanel lambskin leather

Lambskin

Soft & Smooth

Genuine Chanel lambskin feels exceptionally soft to the touch with a visibly smooth, buttery appearance. The superior quality is easy to distinguish from counterfeits, which tend to feel stiff or plasticky.

Chanel caviar leather

Caviar Leather

Textured & Durable

Caviar leather is made from pebbled calfskin with a distinctly bubbly texture. It should feel like running your hands across raised dimples. More durable than lambskin — less likely to scratch or mark — making it easier to distinguish from inferior counterfeit materials.

Section III

Quilting Pattern

The iconic diamond quilting is one of the strongest authenticity indicators.

Craftsmanship

Diamond Alignment

Check the back of the bag where the pocket sits. The diamond pattern should be perfectly consistent and aligned throughout. For pre-loved bags, slight misalignment may occur from natural leather stretching, so this check is most reliable on new bags.

Section IV

Stitching & Lining

Precision stitching is a hallmark of Chanel craftsmanship.

Stitch Count & Lining

Authentic Chanel bags feature up to eleven stitches per diamond panel. Counterfeits typically have fewer. The interior lining should lie perfectly flat with no bumps, lumps, or creases — signs of inferior leather and poor construction.

Section V

Hardware & Locks

The iconic CC turn-lock and chain straps are among the most scrutinised elements.

Chanel CC lock

CC Turn-Lock

The Interlocking Cs

The right C overlaps the left at the top, and the left C overlaps the right at the bottom. Counterfeits often get the overlap wrong. The lock can be raised or flat. The original 2.55 uses a rectangular "Mademoiselle" lock without CC logo — bags with this lock may still be genuine.

Leather-Threaded Links

Vintage Chanel bags have one link without leather threaded through it — counterfeits often miss this detail. Contemporary bags feature leather folded back and stitched through each link. Always inspect the threading pattern carefully.

Section VI

Branding & Stamps

The embossed Chanel logo and stamping marks reveal telltale signs of authenticity.

Chanel brand stamp

Logo Details

Embossed Precision

The Chanel stamp should be deeply embossed into the leather, not merely "sitting" on the surface. Counterfeits often use thinner fonts with a shallower impression. The logo sits 1.5 cm below the quilted C, total width is 3.3 cm, and the gap between the Cs is consistently 0.9 cm.

Stamping Marks

Stamping marks vary by style and era. If the lock has a stamp, the bag was made in France; those without were made in Italy. Check the back of the turnstile lock — back plates should be attached with flat head screws only, with clean, evenly spaced lettering.

Section VII

Shape & Zippers

Final details that separate genuine craftsmanship from imitations.

Chanel bag construction

Construction

Bag Silhouette

Authentic Chanel bags have crisp, square-shaped corners — not rounded. Counterfeits are often poorly constructed with a boxy, rounded silhouette that indicates improper turning and inferior materials.

Zipper Varieties

Chanel uses a range of authenticated zipper brands: Lampo (always on metal teeth), EP (leather pull tabs), three-Cs-in-circle, OPTI DMC, Éclair, DMC, and YKK. Older and vintage bags may have unmarked zippers. Any other branding is a red flag.

Knowledge Is Your Best Protection

No single indicator determines authenticity on its own. Consider the full picture — serial numbers, microchip plates, leather quality, stitching precision, hardware details, and overall construction — to make an informed assessment.
