How to Care for Designer Bags in Malaysia's Humidity (2026): Storage, Mould and Leather-by-Leather Tips

Most of the damage we see on pre-owned bags in Malaysia is not wear. It is storage. A bag used twice and then left in a closed wardrobe for a year can come out with mould on the lining, a sticky interior, a darkened handle and a flap that no longer sits flat — and each of those takes points off its condition grade and ringgit off its value.

Malaysia's air is humid all year round, and a closed wardrobe with no air-conditioning is often worse than the room around it. Leather is a natural material that takes on moisture from the air, which is exactly what mould needs. This guide covers what actually works here, what does more harm than good, and how to treat the leathers we see most often.

The Five Rules That Prevent Most Damage

  1. Keep air moving. Do not seal bags away for months. Take them out, open them and let them breathe at least once a month, in an air-conditioned room if you can.
  2. Keep humidity down where the bags live. A small dehumidifier in the wardrobe room, or regular air-conditioning, does more for your bags than any product you put inside them.
  3. Never store in plastic. Plastic bags, cling film and airtight boxes trap moisture against the leather. Use the cotton dust bag it came with, or a clean cotton pillowcase.
  4. Keep the shape with acid-free paper. Stuff the bag lightly so it holds its shape, and remove the paper before you use it. Avoid newspaper, which can transfer ink.
  5. Keep bags out of the sun and out of the car. Heat and sunlight fade colour and dry leather out, and a parked car in Malaysia gets far hotter than any room.

What Not to Do

Do not put open moisture absorbers inside or next to a bag

Tub-style moisture absorbers (the kind sold as "Thirsty Hippo" and similar) fill with liquid as they work. If one tips or leaks, that liquid can turn leather hard and cardboard-like, and the damage is permanent. We have seen it more than once. If you use them, keep them on a shelf well away from your bags and check them often. Small sealed silica gel sachets are a safer choice inside a dust bag, as long as you replace or dry them regularly.

Do not dry a wet bag with heat

If a bag gets caught in the rain, blot it gently with a soft, dry cloth, stuff it with paper to hold its shape, and let it dry naturally at room temperature. A hairdryer or direct sun can shrink, crack or warp the leather.

Do not wear new denim with a light-coloured bag

Dye from new jeans transfers easily onto pale leather and is very hard to remove. Wash new jeans a few times first, or save light-coloured bags for other outfits.

Do not use household cleaners or wet wipes

Alcohol, baby wipes and household sprays can strip colour and finish. For everyday dust, a soft, dry cloth is enough. For marks that don't come off, take the bag to a professional rather than experimenting.

If You Find Mould

White or grey fuzzy spots on the leather or lining are mould, and they spread. Act quickly:

  • Take the bag out of storage and away from your other bags straight away.
  • Take it outside or somewhere well ventilated, and gently brush the mould off with a soft brush or dry cloth. Do this away from your other bags.
  • Let it air in a dry, shaded place. Do not put it back in the same place until you have dealt with the humidity there.
  • For a valuable bag, or if the mould has left a stain or smell, have it professionally cleaned. Home remedies can remove colour along with the mould.

Mould that is dealt with early usually leaves little trace. Mould that is left for months can stain the lining and leave a smell that lowers the bag's condition grade.

Leather by Leather

Material Found on Watch out for What helps
Chanel caviar Classic Flap, Coco Handle, WOC, card holders Corner wear; shine on corners over time The toughest Chanel leather. Keep stuffed so the flap sits flat; store upright.
Chanel lambskin Classic Flap, Boy, 19 Scratches, pressure marks, colour transfer, darkening where it is touched Carry with clean, dry hands; never stack other bags on top; keep in its dust bag.
Hermès Togo / Clemence Birkin, Picotin, Evelyne Slouching and corner wear Stuff lightly to keep the shape; store upright, never hanging by the handles.
Hermès Epsom Kelly, Constance, Birkin Corner rubbing, edge paint wear Holds its shape well; protect the corners and don't set it down on rough surfaces.

Patent leather Lady Dior, Chanel patent pieces Colour transfer from other items, stickiness in heat Store in its own dust bag so it never touches other bags or printed paper.
Nylon Prada Re-Nylon, Longchamp Lining turning sticky over time in heat Keep in a cool, air-conditioned room; air it regularly.

Everyday Habits That Keep a Bag's Value

  • Put pens and makeup in pouches. A leaking pen or foundation spill inside the lining is one of the most common reasons we mark a bag down.
  • Check your water bottle is sealed before it goes in.
  • Use a bag stand or hook in restaurants so the base and handles are not on the floor.
  • Rotate your bags. A bag used every day for years wears evenly; a bag used daily for a month and then stored for a year is more likely to have problems.
  • Keep the box, dust bag and cards together in a dry place. A complete set is worth more when you sell.

Why This Matters When You Sell

When we value a bag, the condition grade is the single biggest factor in the price. Two identical Chanel card holders, one graded 10/10 and one 8/10, sold with us for RM 3,499 and RM 1,499. Much of the difference between those grades is the kind of damage that good storage prevents: corners, handles, marks inside, and the shape of the bag. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop my designer bag getting mouldy in Malaysia?

Keep air moving and humidity down. Don't seal bags in plastic or airtight boxes, use a cotton dust bag, take bags out and air them at least once a month, and keep the room dry with air-conditioning or a dehumidifier.

Are moisture absorbers like Thirsty Hippo safe for handbags?

Not inside or next to the bag. These tubs collect liquid, and if they tip or leak the liquid can turn leather permanently hard. Keep them on a separate shelf, or use small sealed silica gel sachets inside the dust bag instead.

How should I store a Chanel or Hermès bag?

Upright, lightly stuffed with acid-free paper, in its cotton dust bag, on a shelf in a cool, dry room. Don't hang it by the handles or chain, and don't stack other bags on top of it.

What should I do if my leather bag gets wet?

Blot it gently with a soft, dry cloth, stuff it with paper to hold its shape, and let it dry naturally at room temperature. Never use a hairdryer or put it in the sun.

Why has the inside of my bag gone sticky?

Some coated linings and older nylon break down in heat and humidity over time and turn sticky. Keeping the bag in a cool, air-conditioned room slows this down. Once a lining is sticky, it usually needs professional repair.

Why are my Louis Vuitton handles turning dark?

The handles and trim on many Louis Vuitton canvas bags are untreated natural leather, which darkens naturally with sunlight, handling and time. An even darkening is normal. Water spots and dark patches from wet or oily hands are what to avoid.

Does good care affect how much my bag is worth?

Yes, a great deal. Condition is the single biggest factor in a bag's resale price, and much of what lowers a grade — mould, stains, a lost shape, marks inside — comes from storage rather than use.
