On a modern bag you are usually looking for "CHRISTIAN DIOR" and, on many pieces, "PARIS" beneath or beside it, embossed into a leather tab or directly into the lining. The house uses a clean serif with even weight across each letter, precise spacing, and crisp terminals. Depending on the piece and its age, the stamp is either blind-embossed or finished in gold or silver foil that matches the bag's hardware. Genuine stamping is uniform in depth from the first letter to the last, sits level, and shows characters identical in height and thickness.
Because Dior has used several stamp treatments over the years, an "unusual" stamp is not automatically fake — which is precisely the trap. The standard of comparison must be a confirmed authentic example of the same model and era, not a generic ideal.
Country of Origin
"Made in Italy" & "Made in France" Placement
Dior bags are made in Italy or, on older and some special pieces, in France. A "Made in Italy" line typically appears with the main heat stamp or on the reverse of the interior leather tag. Vintage French-made pieces from the Galliano years may carry "Made in France" or omit a country line in the same position modern buyers expect. What should never appear is any other country of origin: "Made in China" or similar on the interior stamp is a definitive red flag. Look at the alignment and depth of this line against the main stamp; a mismatch in embossing quality between the two is a common giveaway on replicas.

The Code Is a Cross-Check, Never a Verdict
Two points matter more than the decoding. First, the date the code implies should fit when the model and its materials were actually produced — a code suggesting 2012 on a hardware style Dior only introduced later is a problem. Second, a correct-looking code proves very little in isolation: counterfeiters copy plausible codes freely, so the code is a cross-check against everything else, never a standalone verdict. A code that does not decode cleanly is not proof of a fake on its own.

The broader luxury industry has moved toward embedded NFC microchips — Chanel and Louis Vuitton being the documented examples. Dior's own confirmed use of the technology is in footwear: the B33 sneaker, launched in 2023, carries an NFC chip tied to a "Digital Twin" authentication programme. For handbags, some newer pieces are reported to carry embedded chips alongside their leather-stamped codes, but this remains unconfirmed by the house. As of 2026 there is no clear, brand-confirmed, universal Dior handbag chip programme of the kind Chanel publicised.

Cards Support, They Do Not Prove

On an authentic bag the diamonds are uniform in size and proportion across the whole panel, the quilting has consistent depth and tension so no section looks flat or over-stuffed, and the pattern is symmetrical from side to side. Padding gives each diamond a plump, even relief. Genuine stitching runs straight, evenly spaced, and tensioned so it neither puckers the leather nor leaves loose threads.

Weight & Finish
Dense, Even, Well-Finished
Authentic charms have real heft — they feel dense and substantial rather than hollow or tinny. The letters are evenly spaced and consistently sized, the engraving is clean with smooth edges, and the plating is even with no bubbling, discolouration, or worn patches on a piece sold as excellent condition. The charm hooks should be well finished and secure, opening and closing with a definite action rather than feeling flimsy. Fakes tend to feel too light or, oddly, too thick and clumsy; show letters that are unevenly spaced or malformed; carry shallow engraving; and use loose hooks. Because these details are subtle and photograph poorly, the charms are an argument for handling the bag in person.

Handles & Rings
Beyond the Cannage and the D.I.O.R. charms, pay attention to the padded top handles. The handle stitching should be even and tight along its length, and the handles should attach to the metal rings with controlled, stable movement rather than sloppy play. The rings and charm hardware should match the stated hardware colour throughout, with consistent plating quality. On preloved Lady Diors, uneven handle stitching or hardware that feels loose at the rings is worth questioning.
Saddle Bag
Hardware, Magnet & Silhouette
The Saddle rewards knowing which version you are looking at. On the vintage Galliano-era originals the flap is secured with a Velcro strip, and the front "D" charm sits above a fixed side "C" hardware piece; the D charm should wiggle when touched while the C is soldered firmly in place, and the back of the hardware carries "Christian Dior" engraving. The bag's silhouette should dip inward at the centre of the top line like an actual saddle rather than running dead-straight. On the modern Chiuri-era reissues the closure and CD hardware were re-engineered, so a magnetic-style closure belongs to the newer generation, not the vintage one. Inside, the interior tab carries a "Christian Dior" and "PARIS" stamp, and the saddle shape should continue through the exterior pocket rather than being flattened out.
Book Tote
Embroidery & Reversibility
The Book Tote is essentially a single embroidered textile construction — the same "Christian Dior" signature and pattern read on both faces, and the bag is unlined, so there is no separate interior fabric to hide behind. Authentic Book Totes show dense, tight, high-stitch-count embroidery with clean motifs and no loose threads or gaps, and the "CHRISTIAN DIOR" signature is embroidered with even, well-formed lettering. Because there is no lining, the reverse of the embroidery should look neat and controlled. Fakes use thinner, looser embroidery with visibly lower stitch density, motifs that look off in proportion or colour, and a floppier hand because the canvas weight and stiffening are wrong.

Dior works mainly in lambskin, calfskin, and its Oblique jacquard canvas. The material itself is a tell.

Supple Lambskin, Slanted Oblique
Lambskin, used on many Lady Diors, is soft, fine-grained, and supple with a subtle sheen; calfskin is firmer and more structured with a natural grain. Genuine leather smells like leather, not chemicals or plastic. The Oblique canvas carries the repeated, slanted "Dior" wordmark jacquard (designed by Marc Bohan in 1967) — not the interlocking "CD" signature, which Dior reserves for hardware and the separate CD Diamond canvas. On authentic pieces the wordmark is crisp and correctly proportioned, sits at a consistent slant, and aligns so the pattern flows sensibly across seams and around the bag.
