Dior Authentication Guide
How to Authenticate a Dior Bag
From the interior heat stamp and date codes to the Cannage quilting, the D.I.O.R. charms and the Saddle hardware — a complete guide to the craftsmanship details that reveal a genuine Dior, with attention to the Lady Dior, Saddle and Book Tote.
The "Christian Dior" Heat Stamp & Font
Almost every authentication conversation begins at the interior heat stamp. Look closely at the lettering, the depth, and the alignment.
Lettering & Consistency · Clean Serif, Even Depth
On a modern bag you are usually looking for "CHRISTIAN DIOR" and, on many pieces, "PARIS" beneath or beside it, embossed into a leather tab or directly into the lining. The house uses a clean serif with even weight across each letter, precise spacing, and crisp terminals. Depending on the piece and its age, the stamp is either blind-embossed or finished in gold or silver foil that matches the bag's hardware. Genuine stamping is uniform in depth from the first letter to the last, sits level, and shows characters identical in height and thickness.
- Even serif — Consistent weight, precise spacing, crisp terminals
- Uniform depth — Level and even from the first letter to the last
- Foil match — Gold or silver foil matches the bag's hardware, applied evenly
- Red flag — Fat or thin letters, drifting spacing, bled or flaked foil
Because Dior has used several stamp treatments over the years, an "unusual" stamp is not automatically fake — which is precisely the trap. The standard of comparison must be a confirmed authentic example of the same model and era, not a generic ideal.
Country of Origin · "Made in Italy" & "Made in France" Placement
Dior bags are made mainly in Italy, with some made in Spain and, on older and some special pieces, in France. A "Made in Italy" line typically appears with the main heat stamp or on the reverse of the interior leather tag. Vintage French-made pieces may carry "Made in France" or omit a country line in the same position modern buyers expect. Any other country of origin, such as "Made in China", on the interior stamp of a Dior handbag is a serious red flag. Look at the alignment and depth of this line against the main stamp; a mismatch in embossing quality between the two is a common giveaway on replicas.
Serial & Date Codes: Format & Meaning
Most Dior bags made from the late 1990s onwards carry date codes rather than conventional serial numbers; earlier bags often have none, and some recent bags are reported to carry an embedded chip instead of a visible code. Treat the following as a guide to the pattern rather than a rule that decodes every bag.
| Format / Era | How to Read It |
|---|---|
| Modern bags | Two digits, then two letters, then four digits — for example 06-MA-1019. Usually stamped on the reverse of the interior leather tag, or on a smaller tab tucked into a pocket seam. |
| Late 1990s | A shorter two-letter-plus-four-digit format such as MA-0959. |
| Factory letters | The letters point to the manufacturing location: MA is widely associated with Italy, MC with Spain. |
| Trailing four digits | Most commonly read as: 1st & 3rd digits = month, 2nd & 4th digits = year. A sequence ending 1019 reads as month 11 (from 1 and 1), year 09 (from 0 and 9) — November 2009. Variations exist. |
The Code Is a Cross-Check, Never a Verdict
Two points matter more than the decoding. First, the date the code implies should fit when the model and its materials were actually produced — a code suggesting 2012 on a hardware style Dior only introduced later is a problem. Second, a correct-looking code proves very little in isolation: counterfeiters copy plausible codes freely, so the code is a cross-check against everything else, never a standalone verdict. A code that does not decode cleanly is not proof of a fake on its own.
Does Dior Use Microchips Now?
This is where you should be careful with confident claims online.
Confirmed in Footwear, Unconfirmed in Handbags
The broader luxury industry has moved toward embedded NFC microchips — Chanel and Louis Vuitton being the documented examples. Dior's own confirmed use of the technology is in footwear: limited-edition B33 sneakers released in 2023 carry an NFC chip under the right sole, linked to a digital certificate of authenticity. For handbags, pieces made from around 2021 are reported to carry embedded NFC chips, in some cases in place of a visible date code, but this remains unconfirmed by the house. As of 2026 there is no clear, brand-confirmed, universal Dior handbag chip programme of the kind Chanel publicised.
Important · Do not treat the presence or absence of a chip as decisive — where present, the chip is not consumer-verifiable at the counter, only another data point for a professional
Cards Support, They Do Not Prove
Be sceptical of any seller who claims a chip "proves" authenticity. Likewise, the paper authenticity or quality-control card that ships with many Dior bags is helpful for completeness but is trivially faked and must match the bag's own style — supporting evidence, not proof.
Cannage Quilting & Stitch Regularity
The Cannage pattern — Dior's signature quilted diamond, named after the caning on the Napoleon III chairs used at the house's first shows — is the heart of the Lady Dior.
Quilting & Tension · Uniform Diamonds, Straight Stitches
On an authentic bag the diamonds are uniform in size and proportion across the whole panel, the quilting has consistent depth and tension so no section looks flat or over-stuffed, and the pattern is symmetrical from side to side. Padding gives each diamond a plump, even relief. Genuine stitching runs straight, evenly spaced, and tensioned so it neither puckers the leather nor leaves loose threads.
- Uniform — Diamonds identical in size and proportion across the panel
- Symmetry — Pattern lines up around the sides and base
- Red flag — Shallow or slack quilting, rows drifting out of parallel
- Stitching — Sloppy, wandering, or uneven stitching is a reliable tell
The D.I.O.R. Charms
The lettered charms that spell D-I-O-R and hang from the handle are a signature of the Lady Dior and a favourite place to catch a fake.

Weight & Finish · Dense, Even, Well-Finished
Authentic charms have real heft — they feel dense and substantial rather than hollow or tinny. The letters are evenly spaced and consistently sized, the engraving is clean with smooth edges, and the plating is even with no bubbling, discolouration, or worn patches on a piece sold as excellent condition. The charm hooks should be well finished and secure, opening and closing with a definite action rather than feeling flimsy. Fakes tend to feel too light or, oddly, too thick and clumsy; show letters that are unevenly spaced or malformed; carry shallow engraving; and use loose hooks. Because these details are subtle and photograph poorly, the charms are an argument for handling the bag in person.
Model-Specific Tells
Beyond the shared signals, each of the three models Malaysian buyers ask about most has its own giveaways.

Lady Dior · Handles & Rings
Beyond the Cannage and the D.I.O.R. charms, pay attention to the padded top handles. The handle stitching should be even and tight along its length, and the handles should attach to the metal rings with controlled, stable movement rather than sloppy play. The rings and charm hardware should match the stated hardware colour throughout, with consistent plating quality. On preloved Lady Diors, uneven handle stitching or hardware that feels loose at the rings is worth questioning.
Saddle Bag · Hardware, Magnet & Silhouette
The Saddle rewards knowing which version you are looking at. On the vintage Galliano-era originals the flap is secured with a Velcro strip, and the front "D" charm sits above a fixed side "C" hardware piece; the D charm should wiggle when touched while the C is soldered firmly in place, and the back of the hardware carries "Christian Dior" engraving. The bag's silhouette should dip inward at the centre of the top line like an actual saddle rather than running dead-straight. On the modern Chiuri-era reissues the closure and CD hardware were re-engineered, so a magnetic-style closure belongs to the newer generation, not the vintage one. Inside, the interior tab carries a "Christian Dior" and "PARIS" stamp, and the inner seam should curve in at the centre so the closed flap keeps its saddle shape.
Book Tote · Embroidery & Reversibility
The classic canvas Book Tote is essentially a single embroidered textile construction — the embroidery shows through on the inside, and the bag is unlined, so there is no separate interior fabric to hide behind. Authentic Book Totes show dense, tight, high-stitch-count embroidery with clean motifs and no loose threads or gaps, and the "CHRISTIAN DIOR" signature is embroidered with even, well-formed lettering. Because there is no lining, the reverse of the embroidery should look neat and controlled. Fakes use thinner, looser embroidery with visibly lower stitch density, motifs that look off in proportion or colour, and a floppier hand because the canvas weight and stiffening are wrong.
Leather, Canvas & Materials
Dior works mainly in lambskin, calfskin, and its Oblique jacquard canvas. The material itself is a tell.
Leather & Canvas · Supple Lambskin, Slanted Oblique
Lambskin, used on many Lady Diors, is soft, fine-grained, and supple with a subtle sheen; calfskin is firmer and more structured with a natural grain. Genuine leather smells like leather, not chemicals or plastic. The Oblique canvas carries the repeated, slanted "Dior" wordmark jacquard (designed by Marc Bohan in 1967) — not the interlocking "CD" initials, which appear mainly on hardware and on the separate CD Diamond canvas. On authentic pieces the wordmark is crisp and correctly proportioned, sits at a consistent slant, and aligns so the pattern flows sensibly across seams and around the bag.
- Leather — Smells like leather, never chemical or plastic
- Oblique — Slanted "Dior" wordmark, crisp and correctly proportioned
- Red flag — Misaligned wordmark, plasticky sheen, uneven canvas weight
Why Professional Authentication Still Matters
No single feature — not the font, not a decoded date code, not a chip, not a card — is proof on its own.
The Whole Picture · Machine Analysis Plus Human Expertise
Every tell above can be studied by a determined counterfeiter, and the best "super fakes" now copy stamps, codes, charms, and even Cannage tension well enough to fool a careful buyer working from photos. Authentication is about the whole picture: construction, materials, hardware, and coding, and how they agree for a specific model and era. That is why at Glampot our experienced team authenticates every bag by hand, using Entrupy (AI-driven microscopic analysis), Real Authentication or Bababebi when needed. Machine analysis plus human expertise catches what either would miss alone, which matters more for Dior than for almost any other brand given how much its signals have shifted over the years.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions Malaysian buyers and sellers ask us most about authenticating Dior.
Do Dior bags have serial numbers?
Most Dior bags made from the late 1990s onwards carry date codes rather than conventional serial numbers; earlier bags often have none, and some recent bags are reported to carry an embedded chip instead. On modern bags the code commonly reads as two digits, two letters, then four digits (for example 06-MA-1019), usually stamped on the reverse of the interior leather tag. The letters indicate the factory and the trailing digits encode the month and year of production.
How do you read a Dior date code?
On the common modern format, the two letters point to the manufacturing location (MA is widely linked to Italy, MC to Spain), and in the four trailing digits the first and third digits give the month while the second and fourth give the year. So a code ending 1019 reads as November 2009. Variations exist, so a code that does not decode cleanly is not automatically fake — and a correct-looking code alone never proves authenticity.
Does Dior use microchips now?
Dior's confirmed use of NFC technology is in footwear — limited-edition B33 sneakers released in 2023 carry an NFC chip under the right sole, linked to a digital certificate of authenticity. Dior handbags made from around 2021 are reported to include embedded microchips, sometimes in place of a visible date code, but this remains unconfirmed by the house. As of 2026 there is no clearly confirmed universal Dior handbag chip programme like Chanel's, and authenticators still rely mainly on construction, stamping, and coding. Treat a chip as one data point for a professional, not as consumer-verifiable proof.
How can you spot a fake Lady Dior?
Check that the Cannage diamonds are uniform in size, depth, and alignment across the whole bag, that the D.I.O.R. charms feel heavy with evenly spaced, cleanly engraved letters, and that the "Christian Dior" heat stamp uses a crisp, even serif font. Loose or wandering stitching, lightweight or clumsy charms, misaligned quilting, and a chemical smell are all warning signs. Because good fakes copy these details, professional authentication is the safest final step.
Is the Dior Book Tote reversible, and how does that help authentication?
The Book Tote is not designed to be reversible, but the classic canvas version is built from a single embroidered canvas with no separate lining, so the reverse of the embroidery is visible inside. Authentic pieces show dense, tight, high-stitch-count embroidery with clean lettering and a substantial, even-weighted canvas that holds its shape. Thin, loose embroidery, off-proportion motifs, and a floppy hand point to a fake.
